Describe a Place You Visited Where the Air Was Polluted.
- Where Is the Place?
- When You Visited?
- Why Was the Air Not Good?
- And Explain How You Felt About the Place.
I visited Rivers State, one of the thirty-six states in Nigeria. That was in the year 2019 for a two-month course. Prior to that time, I had not had the opportunity to visit the state, though I have heard a lot about it.
I stayed with a friend for two months duration, and about a week into my stay, I perceived there was something wrong with the air.
At first, I noticed that whenever I walked barefoot around the house, my feet became black. I initially assumed it was a result of poor cleaning.
I also noticed black dirt in my nostrils whenever I cleaned it while I was bathing. I was perturbed and had to ask my friend, who told me the air in the area was not clean.
He attributed the cause of the black substance to illegal bunkering and refining of petroleum products in the state. Upon further enquiry, I learnt that the black particulate is called Black soot, and it is a result of incomplete combustion of fossil fuel, and this illegal activity has led to air pollution.
When I was told the cause, I was terrified and scared of the health implications this unclean air would have on the residents of the state.
I felt unsafe and at risk of developing a health complication associated with inhalation and residue of the particulate on the skin.
I read about how to cope with such a situation and stay healthy. I implemented the preventive and control measures I read about until I left the state after I completed my course.
Part 3 Questions: Describe a Place You Visited Where the Air Was Polluted
Question 1:- Is There More Pollution Now than In the Past?
In my opinion, there is more pollution currently than in the past. Technological advancements have contributed to pollution in recent years, and I believe air pollution can be reduced to a great extent. This can be done by monitoring and regulating the amount of pollution generated by specific industries and putting sanctions in place if they exceed the criteria stipulated. In addition, considering alternative sources of energy that will generate a minimum amount of pollution will help in the reduction of air pollution.
Question 2:- Do You Think the City Is Cleaner or Dirtier than The Countryside? Why?
I am of the opinion that the city is dirtier than the countryside. The population of people in the city is quite enormous compared to those in the countryside. Consequently, the amount of waste generated by those in the city will exceed that of those in the countryside. Therefore, it can be stipulated that the amount of waste generated in a place is directly proportional to how dirty the place will be.
Question 3:- What Can Factories and Power Plants Do to Reduce Pollutants?
Factories and power plants need to consider alternative sources of power or energy that generate little to no pollution. They also need to find means of recycling or utilizing their pollutants if possible.
Question 4:- Do You Think Many Companies Have Been Forced to Reduce Pollutants?
Yes, I believe a large number of companies are being forced to reduce their pollutants to the barest minimum since there are consequences if the amount of pollution exceeds an acceptable limit.
Question 5:- Do You Think the Wind Has Any Effect on Pollution? How?
Yes, the wind has an effect on pollution. In my perspective, the wind is a transportation mechanism for pollution. The wind helps in the spread of pollutants from its source to other places, and it is one of the major modes by which pollutants move from one location to another.
