Most major cities around the world continue to grow at a phenomenal rate due to the massive increase in population. This has led to a general decline in the quality of life in city areas as the environment becomes more crowded and polluted. Give some reasons why this growth has occurred and suggest some practical solutions to this problem.
Globally, there is an upsurge of overpopulated urban areas, which has resulted in low quality of life from the large numbers and pollution of the environment. This rapid urbanization is not without cause. Some reasons for this include the concentration of social amenities in urban places and the search for jobs in these areas. Possible solutions to combat this is to ensure that industries are created in rural areas.
To begin with, most governments all over the world concentrate on building more amenities at such places which already have them. As a consequence, the urban areas keep getting more social amenities such as good roads, better road networks, electricity, and recreational centres to the disadvantage of the rural areas. The gap between these settlement areas keeps widening, leading to more people resettling into cities to enjoy the available amenities. In India, for example, Mumbai, which is a major city with good social amenities, battles with the influx of dozens of people striving to relocate there permanently to enjoy such amenities.
Also, the industrialization of urban areas has allowed droves of people to move to such areas in search of jobs. Less developed areas have only a few employment opportunities to offer. The rest of the people can only move to “greener pastures” to meet their job expectations. For instance, in South Africa, Johannesburg, which is the capital city and industrialized, is faced with the issue of overpopulation because a lot more people move there seeking jobs.
This problem is not without hope of a remedy. Governments, NGOs and other stakeholders should make it a point to establish some factories or companies in rural settlements in order to create more jobs and, as such, retain more people in these settlement areas. The creation of these factories will cause the snowball effect as more and better social amenities will be provided for the populace.
In conclusion, there is massive urbanization of cities in various countries globally. However, with the right approach and effort, the problems that arise from this growth of cities, such as pollution of the environment, can be curbed.
