Nowadays, Not Enough Students Choose Science Subjects at University in Many Countries. Why Is This? What Effects Does This Have on Society?
These days, there are fewer students who choose to take a science-based degree at universities or colleges in many countries around the world. There are several reasons behind it.
First of all, there are multiple reasons for the decrease in the rate of students studying at university. A few decades ago, there were limited courses available for students to study. Mainly science, biology, chemistry, etc., but nowadays, they have a number of options in the area of interest. As per market trends, salaries are going down for science-stream students. And study costs are increasing year by year. That is the biggest reason for the downfall in the area of science education.
However, a lower rate of students at university can lead to short-term shortages of scientists in future. This may cause problems in the area of R&D (research and development). It’s also become a problem for companies that hire scientists for research. A higher demand for scientists could lead to good salaries in the future.
Moreover, governments are offering low tuition fees or subsidies for students. This helps to stabilize these types of issues before they become a serious problem. These types of government intervention can motivate students to learn those subjects that they cannot afford.
