Some Feel that Cities Should Be Designed to Be Beautiful While Others Feel Their Functionality

Some feel that cities should be designed to be beautiful while others feel their functionality is more important. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

Development in the cities is directly reflected in the country’s progress. Because of this, some argue that cities should be developed in such a way that they look beautiful, whilst others believe that functional development is more crucial than beauty. I, too, agree with the latter opinion, and in the forthcoming paragraphs, I will discuss both views along with my opinion.

Everyone enjoys beautiful surroundings, which please the eyes and mind. If the city is beautifully designed, then people will love to visit, and it can become a tourist attraction. This can promote countries’ tourism, and this boosts the economy. However, the charm of beauty will stay only for a limited period; if it is not comfortable to live there, and if only a few individuals prefer to stay there, then beauty is of no use. For example, Jammu and Kashmir are like heaven on earth, but despite this beauty, many people started migrating from there because it lacks many basic facilities such as safety and internet.

On the other hand, if the city is designed so that it is comfortable to live there along with all the basic necessities, then citizens will definitely choose that city to live in. In other words, before designing cities, people’s problems were asked about and assessed, such as better transport facilities, water, electricity, and gas availability, traffic issues along with planting trees on the roadside will make it a better place to live. Moreover, this kind of city work as a model to develop other cities. To illustrate, In India, Gandhinagr’s design is based on Chandigarh, which is designed perfectly in a way that people enjoy staying there.

Although beauty has its own importance, it can never beat functional quality, which is definitely more valuable. Individuals already have a lot of stress regarding work or other family issues in their day-to-day lives. On top of this, if they have to suffer from other problems such as water shortage or no electricity, then their life’s quality will not be better. Citizens’ comfort and safety should be the top priority for any country. Hence, cities should be designed more functionally.

To conclude, though it is difficult to choose between beauty and function, if we think of the long-term, then function is definitely more essential in day-to-day life. Beauty might fade away with time, but better function provides comfort, which is necessary, isn’t it?
