Some People Believe that Everyone Has a Right to Have Access to University Education

Some people believe that everyone has a right to have access to university education and that governments should make it free for all students no matter what financial background they have. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Education is a basic human right, and I believe that in this contemporary era, the progress and development of every nation depend on how literate its inhabitants are. So this often generates a debate as to whether university education should be made free and accessible to everyone irrespective of their financial background. I absolutely disagree with this argument, and my rationale behind my viewpoint will be divulged in the forthcoming paragraphs.

To commence with, it undoubtedly that tertiary education is an essential component to the development of every state but running a tertiary is very expensive, and the government will not be able to finance it. for instance, Ghana as a developing country has equally important sectors like the health that also need a fair share of the national cake. Thus if university education is made free, the government will not be able to develop other sectors; therefore, the government could subsidize the fees and grant scholarships to needy but brilliant students.

In addition, if university education is made free, people will not value it because they didn’t invest in it. A study in the USA in the year 2006 shows that people tend to appreciate and utilize certificates they spend time and money in its acquisition.

Furthermore, with this colossal increase in population, if tertiary education is made free, it means our forest reserve need to cut down in other to expand or build new structures to accommodate the increasing number of students that will be enrolling in these institutes, thereby affecting our ecological balance in the long run.

To sum up, I believe education at any level should be accessible to everyone, but university education should not be free. Government and other stakeholders could provide scholarships as well as subsidize the course fees of the university.
