The chart below shows estimated world literacy rates by region and by gender for the year 2000

The above graph represents uneducated people by geographical location and sex for the year 2000. overall, the illiteracy rate was high in Arab states, South Asia, sub-Saharan African countries, while it was lowest in the developed countries. However, there is a huge gender – gap between educated people in all countries.

Developed countries stood at the first place in the world literacy index, with only 4% of males and 2% of females unable to read and write while south-Asian countries stood at the bottom of the world literary index, 32% of men and 52% of women are illiterate. Latin American was recorded as Second – highest in the word literacy index, nearly 10% of males and 12% of women are uneducated, while Arab states were recorded as second lowest in world literacy index, 32% of men and 92% of women are not educated.

To conclude, more people are educated in developed countries while many people are uneducated in south Asian countries. The women’s illiteracy rate was high compared to men.
