The line chart illustrates the number of visitors in millions in three different categories based on the purpose of their visit to the USA from overseas for 20 years, starting from 1989. Overall, the graph shows that the number of people who came to the USA to meet their family and relatives gradually increased. In contrast, the figures for people who reached the USA for holiday and business purposes fluctuated.

As can be seen from the graph, nearly 3.5 million visits were made to the USA by foreigners to meet their friends and family members in 1989. In the subsequent years, the numbers grew steadily until they reached above 4 million in 1996. Following a steep increase in the succeeding three years, it reached 6 million in 2001. The figures reached their all-time high in 2009, which was around 7 million. Though it remained a category with the least number of visitors among the three groups, it outnumbered the figures for business visits during 1991 and 1994.

In contrast, the other two categories exhibited a different trend. In 1998, nearly 6.5 million opted for the USA as their holiday destination. From 1991, it dramatically increased and peaked at 9 million in 1996. In the following years, the number of tourists to the USA dropped considerably to about 6.5 million. Gradually, the numbers went up rather quickly, reaching 8 million in 2009. Likewise, business professionals made about 5 million business visits to the country. Following a sharp fall in 1994, the number of business visits rose significantly and reached 8 million in 2009.
