Describe an Outdoor Sport You Would Like to Do

  • What is it?
  • When/where would you like to do?
  • With whom would you like to do?
  • And explain why you would like to do it?

Okay, so there’s one outdoor activity that I’ve been dreaming of doing for a long time, and that is long-distance cycling.

Now, I don’t just mean cycling around my city for an hour. I’m talking about a proper, high-endurance cycling expedition. The sport itself is simple, just riding a bicycle, but I’m talking about taking it to a whole new level, making it a real test of stamina and willpower.

My ultimate dream, the “where” and “when” part of this, is to cycle the famous Manali to Leh highway in the Himalayas. It’s this legendary, high-altitude road that stretches over 400 kilometres and crosses some of the world’s highest mountain passes. It’s a proper “bucket list” item for adventurers. I would love to do this in the peak of summer, probably around June or July, which is when the snow has cleared and the road is actually open.

This is definitely not something I would attempt alone; it’s far too challenging and remote. I would want to do this with a small group of my closest friends, the ones who are just as crazy about adventure as I am. We’d all need to train for months. And practically speaking, we’d probably need a support vehicle with our supplies, tents, and a mechanic, which is how most professional groups do it. It would be a shared journey of struggle and achievement.

The reasons “why” I want to do this are… well, there are so many. First, it’s the sheer physical and mental challenge. I’ve heard the altitude is brutal, the air is thin, and the climbs are incredibly steep. Just being able to finish that journey, to push my body to its absolute limit and not give up… I think the sense of accomplishment would be unlike anything else.

But the main reason, more than the challenge, is the scenery and the freedom. I’ve driven that route in a car, and it’s beautiful, but you’re just looking at the landscape through a glass window. When you’re on a bike, you are part of the landscape. You can feel the wind, you can smell the pine in the air, you can hear the river roaring next to you. You can stop anywhere you want, take a photo, or just sit by a stream. It’s a slow, immersive way to travel.

I’ve seen so many vlogs on YouTube of people doing this, and the sense of freedom looks incredible. In our fast-paced, digital lives, I think spending 10 or 12 days completely disconnected, with just one goal—to reach the next stop—would be a powerful mental reset. It’s not just a sport; it’s an adventure, a meditation, and a pilgrimage all in one.

Part 3 Questions: Describe an Outdoor Sport You Would Like to Do

Question 1: What is the difference between indoor sports and outdoor sports?

Arre, the biggest difference is the environment, obviously. Indoor sports, like badminton, table tennis, or chess, are played in a completely controlled setting. You have air conditioning, perfect flat floors, and artificial lighting. There’s no wind, no sun, no rain to worry about. But outdoor sports, like cricket or football, are played in nature. You have to deal with the real world—the hot sun, the wind, maybe an uneven field. Outdoor sports feel much more raw and unpredictable, and you also get the benefit of fresh air.

Question 2: Which outdoor sports are popular in India?

In India, there is only one answer: cricket. It’s not just a sport; it’s a religion. You will find kids playing ‘gully cricket’ in every single street, park, and empty plot of land. But apart from cricket, football (or soccer) is becoming extremely popular, especially with the younger generation watching the English Premier League. In rural areas, especially in Punjab and Haryana, traditional sports like kabaddi and wrestling (kushti) are also very popular and draw huge crowds.

Question 3: Which sports are popular among elderly people?

You won’t see them playing cricket, that’s for sure! For the elderly, the most popular activity by far is walking. Our local parks are filled every morning and evening with seniors walking in groups. It’s as much about socializing as it is about exercise. Besides walking, yoga is extremely popular. Many parks have free, open-air yoga classes. And you’ll also see a very unique thing in India: “laughing clubs,” where groups of seniors just get together and laugh as a form of exercise.

Question 4: Which outdoor sports are popular with children?

Again, cricket is number one. Every kid wants to be the next Virat Kohli. But other than that, badminton is very common because it’s so easy to set up. You just need two rackets and a small open space, and you’ll see kids playing it outside their houses. Cycling is also a huge part of childhood; every kid loves riding their bike around the neighbourhood in the evening. And in schools, you’ll see them playing football, basketball, and athletics like running races.

Question 5: Which sports can children do on rainy days?

Oh, when it rains, everything moves indoors. The most traditional games are carrom and ludo. Almost every family in India has a carrom board, and it’s a fantastic game that the whole family can play together. Chess is also very popular for kids who are into more strategic games. And let’s be honest, in today’s world, the most popular rainy-day ‘sport’ is probably a video game, like FIFA on a console or BGMI on a mobile phone.

Question 6:- How does the weather affect outdoor sports?

Oh, it has a massive impact, especially in India. Our weather is extreme. In the summer, it gets dangerously hot, often 45 degrees Celsius. You simply cannot play sports like cricket in the afternoon; it’s a serious health risk. So, all outdoor activity has to be scheduled for the very early morning or late evening. And during the monsoon season, heavy rain will cancel everything. The grounds get completely waterlogged, making it impossible to play cricket or football. So, players are always at the mercy of the weather.
