Some People Believe that We Cannot Learn Anything from The Past for Our Life Today: Writing Task 2

Some people believe that we cannot learn anything from the past for our life today, while others believe that history is a valuable source of information to understand human life. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

It is an irrefutable fact that the history of the past has provided the present with numerous benefits. However, there is a great controversy among individuals today. While some individuals believe that past experiences have no positive influence on the lives of the present, others believe that knowledge from previous times is beneficial in this contemporary life. This essay shall strongly subscribe to the letter. Meanwhile, the two contracting views shall be critically analyzed, after which a logical conclusion will be provided.

On the one hand, some individuals perceive that the current generation is unlikely to benefit from past experiences. From my perspective, I believe this can be attributed to the fact that they believe the world is better off than in the past. Without a shadow of a doubt, there has been tremendous improvement in diverse aspects of human life at present, which range from a good standard of living, good health, high-tech, spectacular infrastructure, increased agricultural activities and so on. These advances were unavailable in our past histories. To buttress this point, in today’s world, there are advanced technologies employed in agriculture, medicine and even the construction field, which were absent in previous times. Clearly, life at present is much easier than in the past.

On the other hand, some people believe that the current generation learns so much from our forefathers. This is because knowledge of the past has enabled the current generation to avoid several mistakes, which has eventually expedited the economy on a global level. Although some parts of the world are still in the process of developing, the majority of cities have shown tremendous economic advancement just for the mere fact of avoiding certain weaknesses from the past. For instance, concerning the Russian -Ukraine war, NATO is taking measures to exclude themselves from the situation because of the awareness of the irreparable consequences of wars which they have noticed from previous experience.

In conclusion, both sides of the argument have their merits. On balance, however, I believe human nature requires us to learn from the past in order to shape us for a better future.
