Music is played in every society and culture in the world today. Some people believe that music brings only benefits to individuals and societies. Others, however, think that music can negatively influence both. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
People’s opinions differ as to whether music has only a positive impact on people and their surroundings or it can have an adverse effect on both. Personally, I agree with the former viewpoint.
Those who argue against music have their reasons. Firstly, they believe that many music albums promote obscenity, which was never a part of their culture and thus negatively affects the minds of individuals and society. Furthermore, they feel that many musicians present music in a form that stimulates young people towards crime. Many music albums are based on gun culture, murders, and theft. Listening to this type of music incites young people to commit crimes so that they can influence their peers. Therefore, this music makes individuals criminals and negatively influences society because if the young generation is in jail or a gangster, how can society progress?
However, I side with those who believe that music is only beneficial. Firstly, music often fulfils a basic human need for rhythm, melody and aesthetic pleasure. This is because our mind is naturally inclined towards these music patterns; thus, listening to music can alleviate your mood and replenish your lost energy. For example, In many places, people listen to religious music in the morning before starting their day so that they can feel energetic and contented. What makes music beneficial for society is the profit it brings. When a music album is sold, it usually pays a hefty amount of taxes that can be used in many social development projects. Besides this, music also gives employment to many people such as writers, composers, lyricists, singers, actors, and property owners to shoot the video of songs.
In conclusion, while there are reasons to believe that music can have some negative impacts, my view is that it has positively impacted us because not only does it give listeners pleasure but also gives monetary benefits and employment opportunities to society.
